What does my role entail as a Choir Leader?

Being a Choir Leader is one of the most amazing, rewarding and challenging jobs you can do in music. But what actually is the job and could you do it?

Being a successful Choir Leader requires a very talented musician being able to combine various skills. You need to be able to understand harmony and passionately teach it to a group of leisure-time singing groups, who have had varied musical training and experience, in a fun and entertaining way.

You will need to build and inspire a community and lead them through performances and other once-in-a-lifetime musical experiences that they otherwise would never have without you.

In return, the choir members will be grateful to you, look up to you and share their musical journey with you for as long as you can keep inspiring them - giving you a rewarding, stable, long-term musical job working with gracious, generous people who love what you do and are thankful for you.

Our team of musicians were not all 'Choir Leaders' before they worked with us. They were either gigging musicians or music teachers - so don't rule yourself out of doing this because you've got no Choir Leader experience. Not many people do!

If you have experience - great! If you don't, but you're a passionate musician with teaching experience, gigging experience and the desire to do meaningful, musical work that is going to make a real difference to peoples lives, then this is the perfect place for you.

The Buskerteers Choir Story

The concept was to run all-inclusive, non-audition, community choir sessions that leisure-time singers could pay membership fees to attend, be a part of the choir and receive an outstanding professional service in return. This would mean the Choir Leader gets paid musical work, and the Choir Members get to learn all about music and harmony, make new friends and enjoy performance opportunities that they have never experienced before in their lives. Then we could use choir performances to raise money for charitable causes, meaning the local community would benefit from the choir too.

In theory, everyone would benefit from Buskerteers Choir - The Choir Leader gets an amazing job, the Choir Members get an amazing experience and local charities get amazing donations!

In January 2020, Award-Winning Musical Director Andrew Small would put that theory to the test and opened the first 4 Buskerteers Choirs in the UK with the aim of raising £1,000,000 for charity from busking and performing.

Five years later, there are 6 Choir Leaders, 24 Choirs and 1500 choir members all busking together in different parts of the UK and has raised over £150,000 for various charities and won multiple awards including the BBC Make A Difference Award, the Comic Relief Nosey Award and a Pride of Britain Award Nomination. â€‹

Watch the Choir Leaders perform together

Our day-to-day work is bringing people together locally and teaching the choirs some amazing harmonies and having loads of fun with the groups. However, every year we like to bring all of the choirs together in one place for a special event where they can all sing together and the Choir Leaders can perform together in an amazing venue. The following video is a performance of 'You Will Be Found' from the musical Dear Evan Hansen at our most recent event where we raised over £10,000 for Samaritans, a suicide prevention charity.

What skills are needed for the job?

  • Proficient vocalist and guitarist

  • Available to lead Choir rehearsals Mon-Thur evenings

  • Hold a full UK Driving License

  • Fun and upbeat personality

  • Passionate and inspirational teacher

  • A great and effective communicator

  • A great performer and entertainer

  • Great leadership skills

How much will you earn?

£100 fee per 90-minute rehearsal you lead. 4 rehearsals per week x £100 = £400 per week during term time.

We want the very best musicians to work with us and stay with us, and we want our musicians to be well-paid and enjoy a share of the company profits. So here's how it works...

We will train you to run amazing choir sessions and support you in recruiting new choir members, giving you all the skills you need to succeed. We will also invest thousands of pounds into marketing campaigns to give your brand new choirs a massive kickstart, giving you an amazing opportunity to launch a new business in a new area.

You will earn a flat rate of £100 per 90-minute choir rehearsal that you lead. This is usually four sessions per week amounting to £400 per week mon-thurs evening. However, there's more!

At the end of the term, we calculate how much profit the memberships fees from your choirs have made after VAT and other costs like venues and admin etc and we split the profit 50/50. Then 50% goes back into the business to re-invest in future marketing, infrastructure and major events, and the other 50% is your wages.

This means that there is usually another payment at the end of term. This payment can be anywhere from £50 to £5,000. It depends on the size of your overall membership across your groups.

But there's even more.... the longer you stay with us, the more you earn. With every year of Choir Leading experience you gain, your percentage share will incrementally increase by 1%. For example, a Choir Leader with 5 years experience will enjoy 55% of the end of term profits. This would also apply if you want to join our team from another contemporary choir business. If you have 5 years experience working somewhere else, you can expect to start with us earning 55% profit.

Essentially, the more choir members you can recruit, the more you will earn. The longer you stay with us, the more you will earn. The more choirs you open, the more you will earn. So this is a long-term gig,

We can advance you the £400 weekly session fee throughout the term until the end of term calculations can be made to assist you with cashflow. You will also be paid for any extra workshops that you run and any major events that we deliver as a team.

100% our choir leaders have succeeded and in growing and running profitable choirs, with membership numbers ranging from 200 to 400, so it is very likely that you will enjoy the same success with our tried and tested formula and marketing strategy.
